Does Your Player Become Nervous When In The Lead?

COHN: “Do you have any tennis players that tend to get up in a match early, 3-Love or 4-Love, but then will slam on their breaks and allow their opponent to come back in the match?”
COHN: “This is typically related to what I call a comfort zone in tennis. When a tennis player gets up in a match, one of the things they do is they start focusing too much on the outcome. That’s part of the problem. He starts thinking about getting through the match or set and he isn’t focused on the immediate. But, often what I find in this situation is that they didn’t expect to be up this quickly, 3-Love or 4-Love. And typically a player will slam on the breaks, protect their lead, and play more defensively. Some players will go into conservation mode where they feel like ‘This is easy, I don’t want to spend a lot of energy,’ then they start playing less aggressively and play a little more defensively.”
