How to Overcome Fears During Tennis Matches

What is the “I-Have-Nothing-to-Lose” Mindset?

What is the upside of having that approach for competitive tennis matches?

The “I-Have-Nothing-to-Lose” mindset refers to competing with a fear-free mental state. Playing with a nothing-to-lose mindset is liberating.

The fear of failure or negative outcomes is no longer front and center in your mind.

Adopting this mindset frees you to play aggressively, take risks, hit the big serve, go for winners, and take chances during matches. “Going for it” becomes the primary goal.

Therefore, if you meet the standard of playing aggressively, you have achieved success whether you win or lose the match.

In essence, there is no significant downside to “going for it.” This mindset encourages boldness, aggressiveness, and a willingness to take risks on the court.

The opposite of this mentality is the “I-Have-Everything-to-Lose” mindset. In this mindset, fear permeates your mind.

Tennis players with this mindset believe, “If I lose, I am a loser.” That is quite a blow to a player’s confidence and self-concept. This results in overly cautious play and, ultimately, underperformance.

Four Characteristics of the “I-Have-Nothing-to-Lose” Mindset

  1. Fearless Play – Instead of overthinking the outcomes of each shot, players are looking for the opportunity to win points.
  2. Resilience – Players with this mindset typically bounce back from unforced errors, lost points, or adversity more quickly.
  3. Willingness to Take Risks – This mindset encourages going for winners and taking calculated risks because there’s no overwhelming worry about what might go wrong.
  4. Laser-Focus – By eliminating the noise of “what ifs,” players can focus more clearly on their strategy for each point.

Fostering the “I-Have-Nothing-to-Lose” mindset requires looking at the big picture.

In other words, long-term growth takes center stage. This allows losses or mistakes to be reframed as learning opportunities rather than catastrophes.

With this approach, players can maintain high confidence, break out of existing comfort zones, and develop more quickly.

After advancing to the third round of the 2025 Australian Open, No. 61 Emma Raducanu commented on her upcoming match against No.2 Iga Swiatek.

RADUCANU: “Obviously, Swiatek’s achieved so much already, and I think going into it I have nothing to lose. I’m just going to swing and give it my best.”

Rather than being intimidated by Swiatek’s achievements, Raducanu views the match as an opportunity to challenge herself and further develop her game.

RADUCANU: It’ll be a very good match for me. Every match I can play against these top opponents, I’m loving it, and it’s another opportunity for me to test my game, see where I’m at…”

In tennis, getting caught up in the score or dwelling on past mistakes is easy. Fearless play requires shifting your focus to the present by playing one point at a time.

Treat each point as an opportunity to reset, strategize, and execute your best shot, regardless of the match situation.

This mindset will help you stay composed, look for solutions, and maintain consistent performance throughout the match.Remind yourself that you are not just a tennis player but also a competitor… and competitors compete no matter what happens during the match or who is on the other side of the court.
