How to Reset During a Tennis Slump

Have you experienced a string of unexpected losses?

Did it feel as if you would never find your way back to top form?

A string of losses, underperformances, and imploding late in matches can have a cumulative negative mental effect on your game.

For some players, as their slump continues, past successes become a distant memory. If you allow a slump to preoccupy your mind, you will start to define yourself by those negative outcomes.

You will lose confidence and motivation. You will feel trapped and hopeless.

When you can’t see a way out of your situation, you will feel mentally and emotionally drained. How can you break the cycle and return to your previous level of play?

The solution is a mental reset.

A mental reset is similar to a timeout during a basketball game. Often a basketball coach will call a timeout when they want to stop the negative momentum of the game.

When the coach sees the team breaking down, a brief interruption can help the team refocus, re-establish their composure, regain positive momentum, and return to their top form.

A mental reset has several benefits:

  • Mental resets help you understand that the continuation of your slump is more mental than physical.

This realization helps you recognize that you haven’t “lost” your ability to play at your peak. You are still talented. You just need to take some steps to develop your mental game.

When you strengthen your mental skills, you will climb out of the performance rut and raise your game to another level with your newly developed mental skills.

  • Mental resets help you identify mental blocks so you can work on finding solutions.
  • Mental resets are like mini-vacations where you can internally recharge and renew your motivation.
  • Mental resets help you re-establish your confidence by bringing into focus past successes and current strengths.

When you are confident, you are better prepared to meet the challenges in future tennis matches.

Even professional tennis players need a mental reset at times. For example, Coco Gauff was having an underwhelming 2024 season. Gauff was eliminated in the quarter-finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At the 2024 Canadian Open, Gauff was upset in the Round of 16, then fell short of defending her title at the Cincinnati Open. Former tennis player Monica Puig suggested Gauff would benefit from a mental reset to regain her form.

PUIG: “I would love to see her make a mental reset. We know the type of tennis she is capable of playing. She needs to focus on serving well, playing the aggressive game style. But, maybe put the US Open and what happened last year behind and start fresh and just build from there.”

Gauff agrees she needs a mental reset to overcome her struggles.

GAUFF: “I feel like I have to work on consistency overall. I’ll probably go home and try to reset.”

Every tennis player will hit a rough patch during their career. Resetting will help you evaluate your current status, identify what you can improve, and strengthen your mental game.

When experiencing a string of poor performances, reset by taking a mental timeout.

Think of it as a moment to catch your breath, stop the negative momentum, and mentally recharge.

During this time, identify mental, physical, and tactical adjustments you can make to your game. Mental resets are often all you need to regain your peak form.
